Who said "Only boyz know how"? Women have been closing in on this popular water sport over the last two decades! The Roxy Pro is hosted in Hawaii has a list of professional women surfers.
Boogie boarding, Women and girls of all ages have been hitting the waves at "The Wall in Waikikii" longer than some can remember. Some of them care not to compete on a professional level but don't let that fool you. There are so many talented natural boarders in the wake!
It’s official, Shark Island is no longer part of the 2009 IBA World Tour. "As the word came down , I bet my girls on tour were devastated". Said Christine, I support them totally, they work so hard and give so much, You would have though the promoters and event sanctions would have worked hard at making it a win, win situation. Nobody wins this way, nobody.
Mark Fordham stated in a interview to IBA that due to the economic climate he would not be able to stage an IBA rated event.
Negotiations with promoter Fordham failed to reach both IBA World Tour and IBA Specialty event sanctioning so unfortunately the event will be black-listed and off limits to contracted riders.
This includes all the riders that competed in the Turbo Pipe Pro and those who compete in the upcoming Brazilian events.
In a statement made by Terry Mckenna the manager fro IBA, “The riders board voted against the speciality event status because we need to work with promoters that will follow the minimum requirements, “Its that simple”.
“ If you surf in this event you will be sitting out of the IBA World Tour for 12 months from the date of the breach”
“ The riders are the product of the IBA and we must protect the exclusivity of the World Tour by enforcing this rule” said Mckenna.
Riders will now look towards Chile’ in late July for the next IBA Grand Slam event.
* exert from section 2-G of the 2009 IBA riders contracts - (g) That a 12 month ban from all IBA sanctioned events will be given to a rider that competes’ in any rebel events without written permission from the IBA & that a US$500 fine will apply only to the IBA Top 32 from the previous years ratings.
What a terrible impact on this growing sport, did they really think about the loss of touch point revenue? What a investment the riders have already sacrificed, to be shun for a year. unreal!

Lus Marie Grand Perez Wins Big at the 2009 Pipeline pro WBA in Sunset Hawaii!
I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Lus Marie at sunset during the final day of the competition. Here she racked up a perfect 10 in the last heat of the contest to win it. Lus Marie is from Arecibo,Puerto Rico and has been Body Boarding for 8 years. She stands a mere 5'3 or so, she has a sweet and genuine smile and is very soft spoken. We talked about her sponsors Custom X, Wahine and her family most import for her was "God" her biggest sponsor of all.
Not even my three and four year olds could shake her nerves, running and screaming in play as she sat talking to me about competing in this game. She was very tender with teaching Lawrence (my four year old) how to stretch right before her final heat, every stretch she did he did. I will never forget the moment as I tried to break the kids away from her so she could focus on game. She insisted "It is alright, I love kids" they made me more nervous than her, for I knew the task at hand and the insurmountable pressure of competing. I hugged her wished her well and kissed her on the cheek, I said "God bless" and made the sign of the cross. I seen how one surfer girl earlier in the day had took a spill and cut her hand on the reef. For a moment I really worried about Lus and her safety as the surf had picked up.
We watched as Lus Marie entered the water with her board, in my head I kept saying "Dang she is stronger than she looks". We watched as she caught wave , and then another and then came the 10 point run, incredible. A day at Sunset we will not forget.

Bevilacqua Takes the 2009 Women's Pipeline Pro in Hawaii.
Australia's Claire Bevilacqua hopes the win will propel her back into the ASP tour. After a leg injury that almost put her out ,Claire hangs in to win" The injury really effected me almost every wave, I felt a little wobbly". Said Bevilacqua "but I was just so psyched up. I just tryed to block it out. I think it was a blessing In disguise'. Bevliacqua injured her leg while warming up wendsday after a spill. Bonzi pipeline is notorious for injuring surfers and Claire seized the opportunity placed before her.
Bevilacqua is rated 7th in the world in female surfing. Her two best waves gained her a 9.33 and a 8.5 to total 17.83 out of 20.
