I am so thankful to meet such a giving soul such as Taiu Bueno of Brazil. I met Taiu through my Friend Alex Lima F. who is a dear friend of Taiu's. I wrote a article on Taiu a while back about his book and his life, he caught my attention with his willingness to share his story of a Pro Surfer tragically injured and now wheel chair bound with no regrets. Taiu has continued to pay it forward by helping young surfers in his area of Brazil. He started out his interview as this:
"When I was 11 years old when I started surfing. From the day one it was my passion in my life and I made it as a professional surfer for a while until that fateful day when in 1991 while getting a tube, the wave threw me into the sandbar and I don't know how but I woke up under the water, already paralyze.
I was rescued by people that were surfing right next to me. They layed me down on the sand. Right at that moment, I felt that my body was anesthetized, on the ground. I had a lot pain on my neck, I couldn't move my neck and I didn't felt my body.
In the beginning you used to say ; No I don't want a wheel chair, I am going to stay here until I walk. After 6 months you start to realize that a wheel chair is better than a bed. Off course you get rebellious, but at the same time, is a lot of good vibe from your family, from your friends, from people that love you. Sometimes I used to wake up and see myself in that situation and I used to say, I don't want to wake up any more; Oh God ! NO ! Let me sleep because was better sleeping. People wonder if I would prefer die... I say ; NO !! I want to be alive !I am very scare to die.
I still work !! I write !! I use a stick on the keyboard at the computer, for I can communicate with the Internet. I hope I will still be a live for long time, contributing for life, for the planet, for surf, and been next to my family, my friends. I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE A LIVE !"
